Car and Motorcycle Tire Pressure Monitors and Monitoring Systems Information and Data

Tire-Pressure-Monitors.com (TPMS)

This website describes commercially available tire pressure monitoring systems which can be installed on Cars, Motorcycles, Recreational & Trailered vehicles, Caravans, Boats, Racetrack Vehicles, Commercial Goods Vehicles or Public Service Vehicles (Buses).

Tire Pressure Monitors give indication and assurance to the driver that tires will perform according to expectations. When tires pressures become low the vehicle handling characteristics are affected and become unpredictable - leading to an accident. The consequences of an accidents can be catastrophic - causing disability, family heartache and expense. For as little as one penny, per wheel per day, it makes common sense to protect your asset, family and future.

Different types of tire pressure monitoring are described, along with different types of Pressure Sensor. A comparison of tire pressure monitor features and manufacturers is also provided.

Pressure Sensors measure vehicle tire pressure and can be fitted to all wheels (including spare wheel or trailer wheels. Tire Pressure Sensors can be either mechanical type (used for the Flag Type Pressure Indicator, or electronic type requiring a small battery to provide power. Signals from electronic type pressure sensors are transmitted wirelessly using low power radio frequencies. Signals are collected by a radio receiver, decoded and presented to the driver to show tire pressures within each wheel or for an alert. Wireless radio frequencies, radiated energy and interference levels are regulated by country legislation but have become unified because of general trade within the automotive industries.

Prices of tire pressure monitoring systems vary according to complexity, from around US$4.0 per wheel up to US$500 per wheel. All forms are described here. Consider TPM System life of 10 or 20 years, plus ability to transfer TPM's from vehicle to vehicle, then the actual cost can be as low as 1.0p per day per wheel.

Flag Indicating Tire Pressure Monitors

These are the cheapest and take just a few seconds to fit. No special skills are required to fit or remove when a vehicle is changed. The indicator is fitted on the tire valve externally by removing the existing valve dust-cap and screwing the indicator in place.

When ordering it is necessary to specify the exact tire pressure because each monitor is fixed to operate at a preset pressure and cannot be adjusted. The internal flag will move as tire pressure falls below the preset condition and will expose either a color band or number. Typically a 3 psi drop will expose a yellow band and a further 3 psi drop will expose a red band. (3 psi = 0.2 bar)

NOTE: these devices are not suitable for sports performance motorcycles

Good Points: Cheap and easy to fit and remove.
Weak Points: Impossible to check when driving. Easy to steal.

Three stages of pressure indication

Wireless Digital Tire Pressure Monitor Systems

TPMS systems measure the actual tire pressure using sensors which incorporate radio tranmitters. The radio signals are picked up by a receiver unit which provides an alarm signal to the driver. Various types of information can be provided for the driver (alarm lamp, actual pressure, audible alarm, voice), and the sensors are either internally wheel mounted or may be externally fitted on the tire valve in place of the valve cap.

More advanced TPMS show the actual tire pressure on a display/receiver unit inside the vehicle. Actual tire pressure is measured by miniature sensors in each wheel which each transmit an encoded radio signal. The receiver/display is a digital back-lit display unit which recognises your vehicle's pre-coded radio signals and sounds an alarm at high or low pressure conditions. Some also indicate and monitor tire temperature. Most work with no external aerial fitted to the receiver, others require an aerial laid along the car underbody. Models are available for various types of vehicle (2 wheeled, 4 / 5 / 6 wheeled, or even 24 wheeled installations. For the motorcyclist simple operation and weatherproofing is more important. For the car user, style may be important. Some TPMS wheel sensors transmit adverse pressure conditions immediately, others that power off when parked only wake-up after the vehicle has achieved a minimum speed (usually 15 mph). For the racing specialist, RS232 links are available to enable conditions to be sent via computer telemetry to the pit.

The receiver/display typically require either a 12v or 24v DC supply, usually switched with the ignition. This may require fitting by a skilled technician. Options include combined Display and Receiver, or separate Display Module and Receiver Module with interconnecting cord.

Good Points: Informative and Assuring. Car manufacturer can integrated into vehicle design.
Weak Points: Not usually possible for owner to self fit wheel sensors.

Good Points: Optional mounting positions, Basic or Full-Function display, no external antenna, proven reliability with worldwide backed by the larges manufacturer of TPMS.
Weak Points: None.

SYSTEM TPMS 1A 1B has been tested by Tire-Pressure-Monitors and is a system we are confident to market to the public. This product is without doubt the easiest to instal, easiest to configure and to use. Version 1B has cute "voice alerts" that speak individual tire pressures and give alarm warnings (english language only). This item is undergoing specification improvements and is not for sale.

Boasting a range of up to 10 metres and with 4 and 6 wheel ability as standard TPMS-1A and 1B are able to be used with 4 or 6 wheel vehicles and with vehicles trailing caravans, boats, etc.

Battery life of 5 years is expected. Alarms at High Temp and various High and Low Pressure conditions. Read more and hear the voice.....

CLICK TO HEAR ME SPEAK ! TPMS-1A and 1B system includes pressure and several alarm levels. CLICK TO HEAR ME SPEAK

Good Points: Easy to fit. Voice Annunciation (model 1B). No external arial neccessary. No dashboard fitting or clutter. Large simple button operation. Can be withdrawn from cigar lighter and stowed (anti theft)...
Weak Points: Maximum pressure 60 psi (4.14 bar).

F1 Racetrack Grade Wireless Digital Tire Pressure & Temperature Monitors

Onboard monitoring and telemetry to pit or works team is achieved using this type of TPMS. Onboard Receivers include RS232 comms capability to for connection to car telemetry systems. All measurements are encoded to ensure confidentiality between race teams. Pressure and Temperature are monitored continually to provide a real time log of conditions.

TPM-S7 top quality and top price where information is all important. See log of actual Tire Temperatures & Pressures

This is a true tire monitor capable of sampling pressure and temperature continually and with high accuracy. Connected to a computer the log enables tyres to be monitored during each corner and over several laps.

Internal Wheel Mounted Pressure Sensors

External Wheel Mounted Pressure Sensors

This type is 100% externally fitted (installed) and has advantage that user can change battery cell. Disadvantages: Easily stolen; No temperature monitoring; Hits kerb on most car wheels.

External tire valve mounted sensor enabling user to replace battery easily. Easy to steal, but useless without matching coded receiver.
